Born in 1947, Master Zhai Wenxiu is a preeminent Heilongjiang paper cutting artist and Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inheritor. With over 70 years of dedicated practice, he revolutionized traditional paper cutting techniques and earned national acclaim, including the prestigious "Golden Scissors" award at the 2016 National ICH Paper Cutting Competition and the title of "New China Paper Cutting Artist" in 2003.
A Legacy Passed Down Through Generations
Hailing from a multi-generational paper cutting family, Master Zhai began learning the craft at age 5 under the guidance of his mother and grandmother. Rooted in Hulan's rich cultural heritage, his work preserves Heilongjiang's regional artistic characteristics while integrating innovative techniques—from monochrome and colored paper cutting to three-dimensional and relief styles—breathing new life into this ancient art form.
The Soul of His Art
Master Zhai's works are celebrated for their vivid regional themes, rich cultural connotations, and masterful integration of painting, calligraphy, and literature. His creations balance bold rural aesthetics with intricate detailing, capturing the essence of daily life and reflecting the progressive spirit of modern times. He published award-winning collections like "Deep Feelings for Grass and Flowers" and created paper cutting illustrations for the classic literary work "Tales of Hulan River".
A Teacher to Thousands
As a passionate educator, Master Zhai founded the Hulan Paper Cutting Association in 1985 and has run free training programs for decades. He has taught thousands of students across China, passing down the essence of paper cutting art to ensure its preservation and evolution for future generations. He currently serves as President of the Hulan Paper Cutting Association and a senior advisor to Heilongjiang's provincial paper cutting society.
